Countering Hate in the Digital Age: Analyzing Far-Right Extremist Responses to the Israel-Hamas War

In October 7th, 2023, Hamas, a Palestinian terrorist organization, that is target is the destruction of Israel, launched a violent attack on Israel, instructing its members to target Israeli civilians, including women and children. This event led to devastating consequences, including the deaths of 1,400 people, the kidnapping of 210 individuals, dozens who are still missing, and more than 3,000 injured. On the same day, Israel Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, declared war against Hamas.

The aftermath of this attack has seen a significant increase in antisemitic incidents worldwide, with notable spikes in the United Kingdom, the United States, Germany, and France. Far-right extremist groups online have aligned with Hamas due to shared antisemitic sentiments, resulting in the spread of propaganda, conspiracy theories, and calls to action against Jewish communities.

This paper examines the online far-right’s response to the Israel-Hamas conflict, highlighting three key themes: the dissemination of propaganda that glorifies Hamas and promotes unfounded conspiracy theories, a call to action in both virtual and physical spaces, and the need for vigilance by policymakers and law enforcement to counteract the spread of hate and violence in the digital age. The interconnectivity of extremist ideologies across borders underscores the importance of addressing this concerning nexus between far-right groups and Hamas.
